About Me
Hi! I’m Moyartu Manley, a junior majoring in Computer Science. Currently, I am undergraduate researcher at Macalester, in the MSCS Department. Advised by Abby Marsh and Suhas Arehalli, my research sits at the intersection of Computational Social Science, Human-Computer Interaction, and Sociology.
I’m particularly interested in:
- In what ways do online communities provide social support and a sense of belonging for individuals with shared identities or interests?
- In what ways do individuals negotiate multiple group affiliations and potential intergroup conflict online?
- How does the level of linguistic homophily within a group relate to its cohesiveness, longevity, and resistance to external influence?
My current research delves into the dynamics of niche internet subgroups, specifically how they use language to signal in-group/out-group belonging, maintain ideological cohesion, and cultivate supportive (or judgmental) environments. I plan to develop this work into my Honors Thesis, so stay tuned for updates!
Besides research, I’m also exploring User-Experience (UX) design and have experience with Figma. My current UX portfolio is a work in progress, but you can learn more about my design thinking there or linked above!
